paint & plaster shed

The Cottage was started during one of our early workshops and is slowly progressing towards being finished. It is a small post and beam straw bale. The front walls around the door are straw/clay infill instead of bales. Straw lightly coated with clay is packed into temporary forms - like "rammed straw."

The green seat is built from straw-clay blocks and fill then plastered with lime and frescoed for color.

The walls are all plastered with clay since they are protected under the wrap-around porch.

The porch columns were painted with linseed oil tinted with purple color.

On the interior is a small loft over half the room. The ceiling is bamboo. The wood beam of the loft and the small vaults beneath are covered with reed mats then filled in with clay and sponged back. The reddish wall is polished clay. The purple wall is lime plaster frescoed with yellow then painted with a casein wash of purple then red. The bench is also a casein wash.
A Mexican clay picture frame reveals the straw-clay mix used for the front 2x6 walls.
An flattened and cut gutter piece reveals the bale beneath the thick straw clay plaster.
The molding around this window is sculpted from straw/clay plaster. The arch is formed with split bamboo.
The wrap-around porch allows us to use clay for window moldings and shelves as well as fine clay and sand plasters on the exterior.
