The site is out on a small peninsula. A backhoe came in and did some levelling and sloping back of creek banks. The kids and grandma staked out the building and strung lines. Using the strings as guides white flour was used to mark the ground. The trench was dug 6" deep the width of a bale on edge plus 3" for plaster. The trench was filled with cement, gravel and stone to grade.

Two row of cinder block was laid on top of the finished footing. The outer row was bond beam block with two runs of rebar and filled with cement. Anchor bolts for sill plates were set in concrete as well as bolts for all-thread attachments one on either side of the bale wall about 6' spacing.

Since the earth plaster does not go down to the ground but stops at the top of the block the block will be exposed. To give it some interesting texture the exterior block was plastered with cement and lime, textured with a plastic bag , scored and smoothed with cement powder. A couple days later it was painted with ferrous sulfate to give it a variegated rust color.

Copper treated wood (an alternative to treated arsenic wood) was used for sill plates.

The top plates were then assembled on top of the sill plates to ensure the correct size.

The space between the block and the cores of the inner course was filled with loose pumice for drainage and insulation.
