Simone Swan and her aid Jesusita Jimenez had graciously showed and taught us how to build this beautifully simple dome. Simone had worked with Hassan Fathy who developed Nubian style domes and vaults.
Cement rubble used for the foundation of a small dome (4x4 mts. -outside)
We formed arches using simple plywood forms over the corners off of which the dome could spring. The walls were made of extra wide straw/clay blocks.
Between each block we filled with dry chunks and mud-straw mortar.

Making small straw-clay blocks for the actual dome.
The simple guide attached with a hinge could swivel to dictate the correct distance and angle of each course of blocks.
Smoothing out the mortar joints on the inside of the dome.
Rebecca Lopez pounding stone chinks ("rahuela") into the mortar joints on the exterior of the dome.
