The foundation is stone and lime. The base walls are large straw/clay blocks laid to make a 18" wall. The shape of the vault is a catanary arch. We hung a chain 1.5 times as long as the width of the building (3 meters) to determine the exact measurements of the curve. After translating the measurements onto the end walls we modified the straw/clay blocks appropriately. Fishing twine was then laid between the curved end walls as guides. Smaller straw/clay blocks were used for the actual vault. Laying them at an angle against the end walls allows the entire thing to be built without formwork. On the vault only a meter of blocks per day could be laid at a time. Next photo
