This week long course is intended for anyone seriously considering building a straw bale house. It is appropriate for those who want to do most of it by themselves or who would like to be well enough informed to make intelligent decisions during the design and build process. It will help each person define an approach that is uniquely based on his or her skill level, available time and resources.
Many facets of designing and building a straw bale home are similar to that of building a conventional house, yet there are definite differences that need to be clearly understood, like critical moisture issues. This building system is also relatively new and is therefore changing rapidly. Participants will learn the latest new and improved techniques and practices that books often can’t keep current on.
Developing small and efficient straw bale buildings that are well matched to their climate and context and maintain a level of comfort through passive conditioning will be a strong focus of the course. As will also be simple and sensible methods and skills that allow for the artistic creation of a uniquely personal and handcrafted home.

During the course a small building will be constructed.

Participants are welcome to bring their floor plans for group design discussions and comments.
